Module 5: The Inner Edge – Emotional Intelligence, Influence & Authentic Leadership

Lead with confidence, self-awareness, values, and emotional intelligence to inspire trust and influence change.

🎤 Introduction, Objectives & Overview

Welcome to Module 5 of the CSLDP.

Leadership starts from the inside out. Before you can influence others, you must first understand and lead yourself. This is where emotional intelligence (EI), self-awareness, and values alignment converge to form the inner edge—the foundation that drives authentic, credible, and sustainable leadership.

True influence is not about positional power. It’s about relational trust, emotional credibility, and the ability to navigate complex situations with clarity and composure. Leaders who master their emotional landscape, strengthen their self-esteem, and live their values are those who others choose to follow, not just those they have to follow.

A healthy sense of self-belief allows you to lead with quiet confidence, even when challenged. Yet many leaders wrestle with imposter syndrome—the persistent feeling of not being “enough” despite evidence of competence. Overcoming this means recognising your achievements, reframing doubt as a sign of growth, and focusing on contribution over perfection. When self-awareness, values, and emotional intelligence work together, they create a leadership presence that is not only authentic but powerfully influential.

This is about showing up as the kind of leader others trust. A leader who is grounded, emotionally aware, and purpose-driven. Because leadership is not just about what you do, it is about how you make people feel.

By the end of this module, you will:
  • Understand the connection between emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and influence
  • Recognise and regulate emotional triggers that hinder leadership effectiveness
  • Identify patterns and moments where you risk reacting instead of responding
  • Explore what matters most to you and how to embed it in your day-to-day leadership
  • Manage imposter syndrome by reframing self-doubt, acknowledging achievements, and leading with self-belief.
  • Understand how consistency, empathy, and emotional transparency build trust

Daniel Goleman, renowned psychologist, author and “father of emotional intelligence,” joins host, executive coach Simone Sweeney, to explore why emotional intelligence (EI) is essential for leadership in today’s world. They dive into the four main components of EI, its evolution and how it shapes effective leaders within organisations. Together, they challenge the outdated notion that emotions have no place in business and highlight that, even with AI’s growing influence, human qualities and emotional intelligence remain irreplaceable.

Daniel shares practical tools for building self awareness, boosting resilience and creating daily stress management routines. He talks about the importance of leaders forging real, heart to heart connections with their teams and unpacks what makes a truly inspiring leader. They also explore how introverted leaders can harness EI to build trust and motivate others, and the ways EI influences workplace culture.

You will learn:
  • Why feedback and coaching are essential in developing emotional intelligence
  • Strategies and tools for coaches and leaders that support leadership development
  • How emotional intelligence impacts employee retention and workplace culture
